Heavy Presence

Squaretop Mountain looms in the distance

Cindy and I first saw Squaretop Mountain and the back-country around it in YouTube videos some time ago, and decided we had to see it for ourselves on this trip.

It did not disappoint.

While we did hike toward it on this day, heavy weather was moving in and we didn’t want to be stranded on foot in unfamiliar territory.  So we played it cautious and turned back when the visibility began to deteriorate.  But we’ll be back.  It’s so gorgeous there that we’ll definitely be back.

Oooooh yeah — I’m with you there. The Wind River Range had been on our list for a long time, and it’s absolutely gorgeous… like a shorter, more intimate version of Yosemite, but without the hoards of tourons.

I know the area from a friend who thru hiked the continental divide trail and his pictures of the area where stunning. I live three hours from Yosemite and I hear you about the crowds. We usually hike up and away from the crowds to amazing places few want to pit in the effort. But those are the places you just can’t drive up to and the extra effort has always been worth it,

My spouse and I are of the same mind, though we’re now of the age where we can’t do the extended hikes we used to do in our younger years. So we try to visit places during the shoulder months, when the crowds are significantly less.
