For what it’s worth, I get asked frequently how I can take such photos with a lowly point-and-shoot.  The answer is to expose for the highlights and post-process for the shadows.  This image was a big challenge because the difference between the interior and exterior light levels was so great, and the colors looked weird; however, converting the image to monochrome took care of both issues, especially when bringing out the shadow details.

And yes, I heavily post-process my images in both Photoshop and Lightroom — but I try to make the edits appear as natural as possible.
