Those Big Eyes

Osprey on watch
Central Maryland — May 2014
Leica M 240 + Leica Telyt 560/6.8

I saw this big boy from a distance, and just loved how he looked on the top of that telephone pole.  I’m always impressed about just how far inland these birds can travel from the ocean.

Great shot ! Google translation sais that an Osprey is what we in dutch call a fishing eagle ( vis-arend). I do live in the northern part of the Netherlands , a province called “Friesland”. About 15 km from where I live is a town called Heerenveen and near that town, since april /may this year a pair of Osprey are nestling there. And up till now I have seen the pair twice flying/gliding above my village 🙂 But much too high to try to make a picture of them.

Yes — osprey are fishing eagles, and I’ve seen them as far away from the ocean as 1,100 miles (1,770 KM). They are very skittish and don’t like being close to people, so normally I can only take decent photos of them when I have a big telephoto lens with me. Glad you like it! 🙂
